A passport is necessary for overseas travel. Some passports, however, are regarded "stronger" than others. The most powerful passports globally are those that provide the most journey liberty.

The most powerful passports are those that enable the owner to freely enter most countries without supplementary entrance requirements, including such visas.

There are numerous factors that influence travel liberty and passport power. Henley & Partners' Henley Passport Index (HPI) is generally acknowledged as the authority on passport power. It ranks every passport in the globe depending on the amount of travel liberty it provides.

How do we measure the strength of a Passport?

Passports are approved by all sovereign countries to their citizens. These documents are needed for overseas travel. However, many locations also demand tourists to have a visa to enter.

In some circumstances, a nation's immigration rules may allow tourists of certain nationalities to tour for a limited period without a visa. This is generally due to bilateral treaties between the two nations involved. In such circumstances, the traveler's passport is all that can be considered necessary.

The more countries a visitor can visit without a visa, the more strong their passport is.

The Henley Passport Index measures passports depending on the number of countries owners can visit without applying for a visa ahead of time (including both embassy visas and online visas).

The HPI rates a passport strongly if it enables the bearer to visit a large number of countries that meet any of the following entry criteria:

  • Only a passport
  • Online visa waiver / electronic travel authorization (eTA)
  • Arrival visas

What are the World’s Strongest Passports for Travel Freedom?

  • Germany and South Korea end up sharing second place. These countries' passports permit the holder to travel visa-free to 190 countries around the world.
  • The majority of the top-ranked passports come from European Union (EU) countries. Passports from Italy, Finland, Luxembourg, and Spain tie for third place, while Austrian and Danish passports tie for fourth. French, Irish, Dutch, Portuguese, and Swedish passports are tied for fifth place.
