Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held their latest express entry draw on May 13, inviting a total of 529 Express entry candidates with a provincial nomination for Canada permanent residence.
In the latest round of invitations, only express entry candidates with provincial nomination were invited with the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score cut-off set at 718 points. The score itself seems high, but if an express entry candidate gets a provincial nomination, they are given a major boost of 600 CRS points.
IRCC after the travel restrictions are following a trend where they are alternating between targeting express entry candidates with the provincial nomination and Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
The previous Express Entry draw targeted Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates with the CRS score cut-off set at 452 points, lowest of the year 2020 so far.
A tie-break rule was used in the latest express entry draw with time-stamp used was March 19, 2020, at 12:53:21 UTC. This means the candidates who have entered the express entry pool with the before used timestamp and had the minimum CRS score of 718 points, were issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to apply for Canada PR Visa.
IRCC has been organizing Express Entry draws this way since Canada closed its borders to stop the spread of the coronavirus on March 18. For a while, the future of Express Entry draws was uncertain, as these periods have often been described in general.
However, if we look back on the years, it seems despite the travel restrictions and this new way of proceeding to Express Entry draws, there were always more ITAs issued in 2020 than at the same time in 2019 and 2018.
The frequency of Express Entry draws has also changed since the implementation of special measures against coronaviruses. At the start of the year, it looked like Express Entry draws were running like clockwork every two weeks on Wednesday. CRS scores hovered around 470 without much change. Then, on March 18, when the travel restrictions came into effect, the first PNP-specific Express Entry draw took place, and five days later, the first CEC draw of the year. Since then, the frequency of draws has been a little more unpredictable.
So far, a total of 34,829 ITAs has been issued that allows Canada to remain in pace with their target of inviting 85,800 new residents for the year 2020.
