Who Is Exempt from Showing Settlement Funds?

If you are already living in Canada with a work permit, you are exempt from demonstrating proof of funds under the AIP. This exemption still allows for flexibility for international workers currently contributing to the Canadian economy.

How Is Family Size Computed?

When considering your settlement fund requirement, the IRCC looks at the size of your entire family, whether or not they are coming with you. This includes:

  • You (the primary applicant)
  • Your spouse or common-law partner
  • Dependent children
  • Dependent children of your spouse or partner
  • Other family members, even if they are Canadian citizens or are not accompanying you during immigration, are included in the number.

What Is Acceptable As Proof Of Funds?

According to the IRCC, valid proof of funds must be a letter coming directly from the bank or financial institution.

  • Must contain your name and contact information of the bank
  • Indicate number of accounts, their balances, and their transaction history for the last six months
  • Indicates all other banking and investment accounts and debts

In addition:

  • You cannot show borrowed funds or equity on your real estate
  • Joint accounts with your spouse are allowed
  • If funds are held in your spouse's name, you must prove access to them

What Is the Atlantic Immigration Program?

The employer-driven Atlantic Immigration Program is designed to assist in securing permanent residence for skilled foreign workers and international graduates in:

  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Nova Scotia
  • Prince Edward Island

The AIP application process requires the following:

  • A valid job offer from a designated employer
  • An endorsement letter from the province

AIP applicants are also eligible to apply for a temporary work permit while waiting for PR approval; the temporary work permit can be issued for up to two years, providing flexibility for both the employer and applicant.
