Canada will reopen the much-awaited Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) invitation starting from July 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announces on July 16, 2025. This program is a part of Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program under its immigration policy, intended to reunite families.

In this year’s invitation, IRCC issued 17,860 applications to submit roughly within two weeks to receive 10,000 completed applications for sponsorship in 2025.

Only 2020 Applicants Eligible for 2025 PGP Invitations

The IRCC has verified that invitations would only be sent to candidates who have not yet been selected but have indicated interest in the 2020 sponsorship form. This decision is based on the agency’s pledge to process the current pool of applications before offering the program to new sponsors.

Qualified applicants are recommended to check the email address they used while they submitted their applications in 2020, including spam or junk mailboxes from July 28.

Because of the strong demand and limited annual entry, Canada invites sponsors under the PGP through a random lottery method. Candidates cannot file a new sponsorship interest application at this time.

Process to Apply

After receiving a sponsorship invitation, candidates can submit the required documents online by using one of the two methods:

  • The Portal for Permanent Residency
  • The portal for Representative Permanent Residence (for applicants using an immigration lawyer or consultant)

Invited candidates must fill out the necessary documents and fulfill the eligibility requirements, including income limits and support responsibilities for their parents or grandparents.

Extended Visits Made Easy: The Super Visa for Family Reunification

For candidates who haven’t received an invitation in 2025, the Super Visa program of Canada is a flexible alternative for reuniting families. To qualify for the Super Visa program, parents and grandparents must:

  • Stay in Canada for a maximum of 5 years.
  • Prolong their stay for up to 2 more years without having to leave the country,
  • Use the visa several times within a period of 10 years.

This long-term permit is quite useful for families planning to extend their time while waiting for future PGP options.

To be eligible, candidates should:

  • Be allowed to enter Canada,
  • Take medical tests,
  • Obtain Canadian medical coverage.
  • Determine if the resident meets the required income standards.

Overview of the Parents and Grandparents Program

The PGP is an essential part of Canada’s overall commitment to family reunion and is a part of the Family Class immigration category. Canadian citizens, legal residents, and qualified Indians can sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent citizenship through this program.

IRCC has been drawing from the same pool since the time the sponsorship interest has been available for the 2020 entry.

There is no information released on the possibility of a new form of acceptance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Invitations starting from July 28, 2025
  • 2020 submissions are only accepted.
  • A maximum of 10,000 filled applications will be considered.
  • The Super Visa is a strong alternative for reuniting with family in Canada.
