Canada has just revealed a major Express Entry overhaul for 2026, expanding permanent residence opportunities for skilled professionals.

The federal government announced it will now prioritize three new occupational categories in its Express Entry draws: researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport professionals, and highly skilled military personnel.

However, this means eligible candidates in these fields could see faster invitations to apply for Canada PR.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the move during a speech at the Canadian Club in Toronto on 18 February 2026, highlighting it as part of Canada’s strategy to address labour shortages and strengthen key sectors.

The minimum work experience requirement for occupational categories has also been increased to one year, adding another layer to the updated selection criteria.

Overview of Canada’s New Express Entry Priority Categories

In 2026, Canada introduced new priority occupation categories under its Express Entry system to better align immigration with labour market needs.

With this update, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will conduct targeted Express Entry draws targeting candidates whose skills are in high demand, rather than relying solely on overall CRS scores.

The newly added priority categories include researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, key transport occupations, and highly skilled military personnel. These categories were selected to support economic growth, strengthen essential sectors, and address workforce shortages across Canada.

Under category-based selection, eligible candidates in these occupations may receive invitations to apply (ITAs) even with comparatively lower CRS scores, provided they meet the minimum eligibility requirements, including the updated work experience criteria.

By expanding these priority categories within Express Entry Program, Canada is creating faster, more focused, and occupation-driven pathways to permanent residence, offering qualified professionals clearer opportunities to achieve Canada PR.
