Canada has now officially opened the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) 2025, giving hope to families that want to stay together forever.

Invitations to Apply (ITA) will be sent out as of July 28, 2025, by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to all permanent residents and citizens who filled in the Interest to Sponsor form in the year 2020 but were rejected in draws held between 2020 and 2024.

The intention of this program is to reunite families while ensuring that sponsors are kept in check to meet certain eligibility requirements and to assure long-term financial support of their parents and grandparents.

Who will get an invitation?

This year, the government plans to send 17,860 invitations through two weeks. Only those who:

  • Filled the legitimate form of interest-to-sponsor in 2020
  • Not received ITA from any of the previous PGP draws (2020-2024)

The email will be sent to your email account used at the time of the 2020 application; thus, it is very important for applicants to check this account (including spam folders) regularly.

The government's goal is to bring in 10,000 complete sponsorship applications by this draw.

Sponsorship Eligibility Requirements

Even if you receive notification of the application, you will still have to prove that you meet the family sponsorship program requirements, including the following:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
  • Currently residing in Canada
  • Must have met the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the last three years
  • Must sign a sponsorship agreement committing you to provide financial support for a period of up to 20 years
  • You must submit all documentation required to prove income, residence, and relationship to the person you are sponsoring.

Step-by-Step Application Procedure

Here’s what you should do once you receive an invitation to apply:

Create or log in to your Permanent Residence (PR) portal client account.

Prepare two applications:

  • Create or log in to your Permanent Residence (PR) portal client account.
  • Prepare two applications:
    • A sponsorship application (filled by you)
    • A permanent residence application (filled by your parent/grandparent)
  • Submit both applications electronically through the PR portal (or the Representative PR Portal in case you are working with an immigration consultant).
  • Complete and submit both digital and PDF forms, including IMM 0008, IMM 1344, IMM 5669, IMM 5771, IMM 5406, IMM 5768,
  • Sign and submit the whole application with supporting docs and the ITA letter.

In case an applicant fails to apply online, an accommodation request can be made.

Application Fees

The PGP fees generally start at CAD 1,205 and include:

  • Sponsorship fees: $85
  • Principal applicant processing fee: $545
  • Right of Permanent Residency fee: $575
  • Biometrics fee (if required): Approximately $85

Other charges will apply if you're sponsoring more than one family member, like the spouse or dependent child of your parent/grandparent.

Important Reminders

  • Applications must be complete when submitted. Incomplete applications will be returned.
  • Accepting biometrics, police certificates, and medical exams will be given upon request during processing.
  • A copy of the ITA letter must be uploaded in the required documents field.
  • Personal information updates (address, marital status) should be reported using the IRCC web form.

What Happens After You Apply?

Following your application being submitted:

  • You will be able to track your application through your PR portal account.
  • IRCC will ask for biometrics and medical exam if required.
  • Police certificates might also be sought, depending on the history of the parents or grandparents.

If your application is approved, your parents or grandparents will receive their Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can officially start their lives in Canada.

Missed the Draw?

If you were not selected this time, you can still think about the Super Visa, which enables your parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada for five years at a stretch with multiple entry for 10 years.
