Overview of Draw Type

In Canada’s immigration system, “draw type” refers to the category of applicants invited by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) during an Express Entry draw. These draws occur every few weeks, and candidates who meet or exceed the required Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

There are four main draw types:

  • All-Program Draws – These are the most common and include applicants from all three programs: Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades (FST). The CRS cut-off in these draws is usually higher since the competition is broader.
  • Program-Specific Draws – These target candidates from a single program. For example, IRCC may invite only CEC applicants in a particular draw.
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Draws – Candidates nominated by provinces receive 600 additional CRS points, which significantly increases their chances of getting an ITA.
  • Category-Based Draws – Introduced in 2023, these focus on in-demand skills, including healthcare, STEM, transportation, agriculture, and proficiency in the French language.
