There are ample of foreign citizens who would want to permanently live in the US and the best way to live in the US is through the Permanent residency status or the green card. The name green card comes from the green design of the card. It is the status of the immigrants of stay in the United States of America and it is allotted for a period of ten years to the candidate and is subject to renewal and reappearance as well upon expiry, by filling the form I-90.

 

What is the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)?

There are different types of visa processes and other forms that need to be filled when a candidate is planning to immigrate to America. The agency which administers the immigration in the American Domain is called the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), prior to this the agency which was responsible for immigration proceedings was Immigration and Naturalization Service(INS) which got defunct in the year 2003. The USCIS is responsible for undertaking most of the immigration proceedings like processing of the visa application, refugee and asylum petitions. Further, all the immigration benefits like issuing the employment authorization documents(EAD) and allowing temporary workers through H-1B and O-1 visas are managed by this governing body only. However, the two key factors that USCIS pays immense importance to are two – when did a candidate became Permanent Resident of the USA and when did they begin formal naturalization process. All the forms and paperwork related to both immigration and naturalization processing is handled by the USCIS only.

There are two types of forms for USA immigration that are handled by the USCIS that are – Immigration related and naturalization related.

  • Forms related to immigration are – Form I -551, Permanent Residency Card
  • Forms related to naturalization are – Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

 

How to acquire the citizenship of the United States of America?

Remember, any candidate who has stayed in the United States of America for a continuous period of five years without long trips abroad is eligible to apply for the citizenship of the USA. Another way through which an immigrant will be able to apply to the United States of America Citizenship is by marrying a U.S citizen. All the requirements of naturalization should be met by the candidate before applying for the citizenship of America.

When a candidate applies for citizenship of America then the format is of one to one interview. There are four parts of the test – speaking, reading, writing and civic test. For the civic test there are ten questions and answering six is mandatory. Through this test the knowledge of the English language and also of the American culture is tested.
