Employment Requirements to Get a Veterinarian Job in Canada

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

• They need 2 years of pre-veterinary university education or completion of a college degree in health science and 4-5 years of a university degree in veterinary medicine. In addition, they need a completion of an exam leading to a national certification.
• A license from a provincial government to practice.

Veterinary Specialists

• They need to complete a degree in veterinary medicine along with 3-4 years of post-graduate education or a residency program in the speciality of their choice.
• They must be recognized by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). Those who wish to practice in Quebec need accreditation by the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec and only 18 specialities are recognized.
• A license from a provincial government to practice.

Research Veterinarian

• They required 2 years of pre-veterinary university education or completion of a college program in health science. Additionally, they need 4-5 years of a university degree in veterinary medicine and completion of an examination that leads to a national certification.
• They require post-graduate studies to get entry into research positions.
