The Requirements for Canada Study Visa

If you are applying for a Canadian study visa, you must meet two sets of Canada Study visa requirements: eligibility requirements and requirements while studying in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for a study permit and Canadian immigration, you must meet the following requirements:

Acceptance Letter: To apply for a Canadian study permit, you must have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

Proof of Financial Support: You must provide documentation demonstrating that you have proof of sufficient funds for Study Visa to cover the cost of tuition for your first year of study, as well as the cost of living (housing, food, etc.) for yourself and any accompanying family members during your first year of study. Please keep in mind that these funds may be in your name or the name of a family member or close friend.

Supporting Documentation: All study permit applications must include extensive supporting documentation. This documentation differs from one country to the next. You can consult the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website to determine the documents required for a specific location, or you can simply contact us to know more.

The visa officer will confirm that you meet the requirements when you apply for your visa. Your application may be rejected if the visa officer found it unsatisfactory.

Requirements while studying in Canada

If your study permit is approved and you enter Canada as an international student, you must meet the requirements listed below to keep your study permit valid. An international student studying in Canada with a study permit must:

  • be enrolled at a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) and should try to complete their program.
  • give proper consideration and respect to the terms & conditions mentioned on their study permit.
  • stop his/her study program if he/she no longer meets the requirements and should leave Canada at the expiry of their permit.

Application Process for Canada Immigration

There are four stages to getting a Canadian study visa:

Examine your eligibility

Check to see if you are eligible for a Canada study visa. You will need an acceptance letter from a DLI, proof of financial support, and a variety of documents such as  passport, medical certificates, language test reports - that vary depending on your citizenship and residence country.

Prepare your application

If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, you can start working on your study permit application. Check that you have all the necessary documents for your country. Immigration officers have the authority to deny study permits if they believe an applicant has not met all requirements, so you should consult a qualified immigration representative to review your application before submission.

Submit your application

While submitting your application, you have two choices:

  • Submit a digital application: Create an account on the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website and submit an application electronically with scanned or electronic copies of documents. Or,
  • Send in a paper application: Make a hard copy of your application and mail it to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) assigned to your country.

If your study permit is approved, start planning your stay and study in Canada

It is important to note that your Canadian study permit will not be issued until you arrive at a Canadian Port of Entry (POE). The Canadian government will issue you a Port of Entry Introduction Letter if your permit is approved. To obtain your study permit, you must keep this letter and show it to an immigration official when you arrive in Canada.

Please keep in mind that your study permit does not serve as a visa. This means that, depending on your country of origin, you may require a travel visa to visit the POE in Canada. The following categories are defined:

Visa Exempt Countries: Citizens of these countries do not need a visa to enter Canada. You can obtain your study permit directly at the Port of Entry. Please keep in mind that you may still need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit Canada.

Non-Visa Exempt Countries: Citizens of these countries must obtain a visa to enter Canada. When your study permit application is approved, the visa officer will send you a travel visa that will allow you to visit Canada.

If you have legally entered Canada, you may apply from within the country. Your study permit will be mailed to you if it is approved.

Minor children in Canada

Minor children, those under the age of 18 or 19 (the age varies by province), do not need a study permit to attend kindergarten, pre-school, primary, or secondary school if one of the following conditions is met:

  • They (or their parents) are refugees or asylum seekers.
  • They are in Canada with a parent who is permitted to work or study.

Foreign military personnel

A member of a foreign armed force on active duty in Canada does not need a permit to study. Their family members, on the other hand, may require study permits.
