Immigration to Canada has become a more viable option through Canadian Express Entry Program. After attainment of coveted PR or Permanent Resident Visa, within the span of three years the individual is eligible for a full-fledged citizenship of the country. However, there are certain yardsticks that need to be accomplished for a smooth immigration in the country and the first and foremost step towards this direction is through points scoring under which language proficiency is understood to be an important criteria.
The language proficiency of the candidate is evaluated through IELTS examination, which is conducted all over India, and it comprises of tests based on the listening, reading, speaking skills of the candidate. There are two official languages of Canada – English and French. While its not important to know both languages but knowledge of both can help attain extra points on the applicants profile.
But, the knowledge of English language is highly integral in a country like Canada not only for professional reasons but also for personal day today communication.
If your first language/preference is English, then you will most likely apply to the Canada Express Entry program through the International English Language Testing System or IELTS as it is popularly called. The IELTS is popular amongst countless number of companies and government institutions. It is considered a premier testing system and employs international standards of English to its examinations. Examinees are tested across 4 key areas of language, namely:
The Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the country’s top federal immigration body, holds IELTS scores valid for up to two years. It has established the minimum number of marks required to qualify for immigration to Canada through Express Entry. If English is your first language then refer to the following chart to know the score rating system followed by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS):
|First official language (Maximum 24 points)|
|CLB Level||Ability: Speaking||Ability: Listening||Ability: Reading||Ability: Writing||Points per ability|
|7||6.0||6.0 – 7.0||6.0||6.0||4|
|10 and above||7.5 – 9.0||8.5 – 9.0||8.0 – 9.0||7.5 – 9.0||6|
The average time taken to process an application by the IRCC is 6 months. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind here that IELTS scores must remain valid for the entirety of the immigration process which includes application, selection and PR status application. So, if your scores are about to expire while the immigration application process is still underway, then it would be wise to retake the test and submit the updated scores to the relevant Canadian authorities.

However, if your other factor considerations like age, educational qualification, work experience and adaptability score well, then you can also qualify for immigration with a CLB 7 score in your first language.
