Language proficiency is one of the factors based on which CRS points are awarded to the express profile. Canada requires candidates to be proficient in either one of the languages: English or French. For this candidates must take a language test that is conducted by an educational institution that is recognized by the Federal government of Canada. For the English language – IELTS (International English Language Test System) is one of the recognized language examinations. The other language test recognized by the Canadian government for English language is Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP).

Immigration to Canada has become a more viable option through Canadian Express Entry Program. After attainment of coveted PR or Permanent Resident Visa, within the span of three years the individual is eligible for a full-fledged citizenship of the country. What is IELTS?

International English Language Test System – IELTS – is one of the recognized education tests that are jointly managed by British Council, Cambridge Assessment English and IDP: IELTS Australia to measure the proficiency of the candidate in English language. IELTS uses a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency, from Non-user (Band Score 1) to the Expert (Band Score 9).

There are two categories available under IELTS:

  • IELTS Academic: For people to apply for higher education or professional registration
  • IELTS General Training: For people who are immigrating to Canada, UK, and Australia

Candidate proficiency is checked in the language in four sections: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. On the day of examination, Reading, Listening and Writing sections are completed without any breaks between them. In case of Speaking section, it can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests.

Listening

Time Duration – 30 minutes

The candidate will listen to four recordings and then will write answers to a series of questions

Reading

Time Duration: 60 minutes

It consists of 40 questions, with questions designed to test a wide range of reading skills. Reading skills includes reading for gist, skimming, reading for main ideas, understanding logical argument and recognizing writer’s opinions, attitudes and purpose

Writing

Time Duration: 60 minutes

The candidate will be given two topics of general interest:

  • Task 1: Candidate will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the situation
  • Task 2: Candidate will be asked to write an essay in response to a problem, point of view or argument

Speaking

Time Duration: 11-14 minutes

This section will assess the use of spoken English.

What is Minimum IELTS requirement for Canada PR Visa?

Express Entry program, a point-based program, manages the profiles of the skilled immigrants applied for Canada PR Visa under Canada’s economic immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Program. For any candidate to be submitted into the express pool, they are required to be eligible under any one of the above-mentioned immigration programs.

For candidates to be eligible to apply for Canada PR Visa through FSWP they must have scored minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7 or IELTS score 6 per band. The following table will help you to translate your IELTS score to CLB Levels:

Once the candidate is able to create an express profile, they are awarded points through CRS. Under language proficiency maximum CRS points awarded when applying with their spouse/partner are 170 points and when applying without spouse/partner maximum CRS points awarded are 160 points.

How can I apply for Canada PR with low IELTS score?

There are over 60 immigration programs under Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to help the immigrants to move to Canada. Express entry program is one of the immigration programs. But it has high Language proficiency requirements to apply for Canada PR Visa.
