The Canadian government is planning to welcome 1.5 million new immigrants between 2024 and 2026 – 485,000 newcomers in 2024 alone. The number will gradually increase in 2025 and 2026. If you wish to be one of them, now is the right time to start planning for Canada immigration 2024.

However, IRCC has implemented new guidelines for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and other immigration programs, which will affect the newcomers in 2024. Furthermore, to process applications faster, IRCC has decided to increase the use of AI technology and improve client experience.

Updates by IRCC for 2024

Launch of Category-Based Draws 

To address the pressing labour shortages and demographic needs, IRCC launched the category-based Express Entry draws. Six categories were selected for these types of draws aimed to retain more skilled workers who can meet labour gaps and contribute to the economy.

2023 was the first year of category-based draws where IRCC invited candidates for the following categories:

• Candidates with French language proficiency.
• Candidates with at least 3 years of work experience in the fields of – Healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Trades, Transport, and Agri-food/Agriculture.

IRCC plans to target the same categories in 2024. However, their focus will reconsider the categories chosen last year and alter them as per the Canadian labour market's changing needs. This means that new groups of individuals will get a chance to be eligible for category-based Express Entry draws in 2024.

New Plans for Provincial Nominee Programs

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) offer newcomers a chance to live and work in a specific province – provided they meet the unique requirements of the said province. For 2024, IRCC has updated PNP guidelines and aims to make it the biggest immigration pathway in Canada.  A new set of guidelines has already been set. 

Also, new multi-year plans are starting for PNPs in 2024 – allowing them to make plans for immigration strategies as they will know their 2025 allocation a year in advance. This will also give newcomers a clear picture of their immigration options.

More Admissions under the Parents and Grandparents Program

The Canadian government understands the importance of family reunifications and therefore, considers it as one of its strongest pillars. If you are a permanent resident or a citizen who wishes to sponsor your parents and grandparents to Canada, there is good news for you!

IRCC has increased the target to bring in more family members under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). 28,500 immigrants were welcomed in 2023, which will increase to 32,000 in 2024.

Updates to the International Student Program

Another change to Canadian immigration in 2024 includes the revision of the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) by IRCC. This has been done to enhance the integrity of the International Student Program across Canada. Also, this update will protect international students and continue to impact the study permit applicants. 

Starting December 1, 2023, the Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) across Canada will confirm the LOA of every applicant directly with IRCC. This will protect new foreign students from fraud while also making sure that their study permits are issued on genuine LOAs.

IRCC will review the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGPW) program in 2024. International students can benefit from this update as Canadian work experience will boost their chances of obtaining permanent residency in the country.

More Changes to Canada Immigration 2024

A lot more changes have been made to improve the experience of newcomers who plan to apply for Canada PR from India in 2024. 

Increased use of AI

Canada is planning to out-compete other countries for talent. With the increased use of AI, IRCC aims to process applications way faster, improve tools for IRCC offices, and meet immigration and diversity targets.

IRCC plans to create a new advisory board in 2024. Their job will be to focus on the issues related to immigration laws and services. Also, the advisory board’s goal would be to strengthen the policy and program development in a human-centric approach.

Introduction of the Chief International Talent Officer

CITO or the Chief International Talent Officer will also be a part of several changes by IRCC in 2024. This will be to align the immigration system with the labour market and sectoral strategies of Canada. Immigrants to Canada in 2024 and beyond must pay attention to the development once someone is appointed.
