Accompanying spouse and family members

Married people or those with dependent children who may wish to see their family members in Canada while studying has an option to do so. They can have their family members on the basis of their Study Visa application although, the Canadian immigration officers will examine study permit applications and allow it only if certain conditions are met. 

Canadian study permits are temporary residence permits, which means that the permit holders are required to demonstrate to the immigration officer that they will leave Canada at the expiry of the permit. If your family members are accompanying you in Canada, the visa officer may infer that you do not intend to leave Canada at the end of your study program. This may influence the visa officer's decision to accept or reject the permit.

All candidates must submit a statement of purpose/personal statement stating why they desire to study in Canada. This portion of the application allows the applicant to describe why they want their spouse and/or children to accompany them to Canada. The immigration officer makes the final decision on the permit, only after reading this statement of purpose. 

Please keep in mind that it is possible to apply for a study visa without the presence of family members, but then later you will be required to submit an amended application seeking permission for family members to join you in Canada. However, if the applicant does not follow the necessary steps, asking to modify an application in this manner can result in misrepresentation, including a five-year suspension from Canada.

Applicants must show that they have enough money to cover their living expenses throughout their first year of study. Those individuals whose families are accompanying them should be prepared to show additional finances to sustain their families. If an Indian student is accompanied by his/her spouse and/or dependent children, he/she should be aware of the implications for his/her housing and health insurance requirements.

Applying with a Spouse?

Indian students are allowed to put their spouse on their application for a Canadian study permit but keep in mind the above-mentioned implications for permit approval. If you are granted a study visa in Canada alongside your spouse, the spouse is eligible to apply for a spousal open work permit. This work permit allows the spouse to work full-time for any employer in Canada, for the duration of their partner's study permit. If both partners want to study in Canada, they will be required to apply for separate permits.

Applying with your Dependent Children?

You are allowed to include dependent children on your application for a Canadian study permit, taking in mind the above-mentioned implications for permit approval. If you are granted a permit to study in Canada with your dependent you’re your kid will be issued a visa allowing him/her to stay in Canada for the same duration as the primary applicant's permit. All minor children have the right to an education at the preschool, primary, or secondary levels if one of their parents is legally permitted to work or study in Canada.

A ‘dependent child' is defined by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada as a person under the age of 22 who does not have a spouse or partner. Individuals above the age of 22 may still be regarded as dependent if they are unable to support themselves financially due to a mental or physical ailment.
