Canada is welcoming remote workers!

Last year in June, Canada declared that digital nomads (remote workers) working for a foreign company can immigrate to Canada for up to six months.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is collaborating with stakeholders on new and improved policies to attract more digital nomads. The department stated that digital nomads who enter Canada - may also decide to seek opportunities with Canadian employers. But in that case, they would need to apply for Canada PR or a Work Permit in order to continue working in Canada.

In this blog, we’ll guide you on how to travel to Canada as a digital nomad - and help you find the perfect destination for your stay.

How to immigrate to Canada as a Digital Nomad?

Under the Digital Nomad Visa, you can enter Canada as a visitor and work remotely as a Digital Nomad for up to six months. The first thing you would need to do is determine what travel authorizations you need to enter Canada as a visitor. This usually depends on the country from where you’re from.

For example, if you’re a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States, you are exempt from the requirements for a Canada Visitor Visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). In this case, you will just be required to show the Canadian border services - your passport and/or green card.

For other countries, you will be either mandated to apply for a Canada Visitor Visa or if you’re from a visa-exempt country, you’ll need an eTA. You can apply for both the Visitor Visa and eTA online.

Where to stay in Canada as a Digital Nomad?

Canada is the second largest country in the world. So, where to spend your time?

It majorly depends on what you want to get out of your time in Canada. Is it the wilderness you’re seeking or are you a city person at heart? Are you trying to save money on the trip or you don’t mind paying more for decent accommodation?

  • If you're into bustling city life, Toronto and Vancouver are popular choices with plenty of job opportunities and diverse communities. However, they can be pricey to live in.
  • If you prefer a slower pace and picturesque scenery, consider places like Banff in Alberta or Victoria in British Columbia. These areas offer stunning natural beauty with outdoor activities like hiking and skiing right at your doorstep.
  • If you're looking for a balance between urban amenities and outdoor adventures, cities like Ottawa, Montreal, and Calgary are great options. They have vibrant cultural scenes, good job markets, and are surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
  • If you're more interested in a close-knit community vibe, smaller towns and cities like Halifax in Nova Scotia or St. John's in Newfoundland could be perfect. They offer friendly atmospheres, affordable living costs, and unique local cultures.
Ultimately, the best part of Canada to move to as a Digital Nomad depends on what you value most in a place to call your temporary home.
