Canada’s Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) is for overseas nationals who want to be employed by a Canadian citizen as a caretaker/nanny for their children or someone with disabilities in the home. What makes it unique is that it is your direct route for Canadian permanent residence.

This program is closed to new candidates. Your eligibility for PR in Canada for the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) is to have a minimum of 2 years of work experience in the program.

Also,

• You must be already working in Canada with an LCP work permit
• Approval by the first LCP work permit depends on your labour market impact assessment. This needs to be submitted to the Employment and Social Development Canada on or before November 30, 2014

The process to hire a Caregiver under the Live-in Caregiver Program:

• Try and fill your position as a permanent resident and Canadian citizen
• Earning to pay them
• Provide them with an acceptable space to live in your home
• Give them a job caring for a child, an elder person, or someone with disabilities

• Positive labour market assessment
• New work permit.
• Put in the live-in arrangement in the Labour Market Impact Assessment application.

Temporary work for Caregivers

Presently working in Canada as a caregiver? You can apply to extend your work permit through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). But first, your employer needs to provide a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Eligibility to apply for a New work permit

In many cases, if you want to work temporarily in Canada you can apply for a work permit through the TFWP. This will apply to you if:

• You are in Canada and qualified to apply for work permit from here
• You will be working in Quebec

How to Hire Foreign Caregivers?

An employer has the responsibility to search for foreign workers through channels of:

• Advertisements
• Personal Connections
• Employment Agencies

Keep in mind to go through the application process for hiring them.

You can find caregivers by advertising for the position in the National Job Bank of Canada or similar tools in:

• Saskatchewan
• Quebec
• Northwest Territories

Even the local Service Canada Centre shall be able to assist you with this. The employer will have to apply for a new work permit listing you as an employer. Without a permit, they are not allowed to work for you.

It is illegal to hire a worker who has no eligibility for PR in Canada or a permanent resident who has not been permitted to work in Canada.

You cannot hire a caregiver on a trial period to see whether they are suitable.
