Immigrating to Canada is an exciting journey that opens up new opportunities for you and your family. The Canadian government offers various pathways to apply for PR such as Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) and applying for both at the same time can significantly boost your chances of getting permanent residency. But for that, you must meet the Canada PR eligibility for both pathways and carefully fill out your application.

Check your Eligibility for Canada PNP & Express Entry Program

This blog discusses the possibilities of applying for Express Entry and a PNP simultaneously and some important points you must remember before starting the process.

Applying for Canada PR through Express Entry

Express Entry is the fastest and most preferred way to apply for Canada PR among immigrants. It is a point-based system that assesses applicants' profiles based on factors like age, language proficiency, work experience, education, and adaptability. Express Entry is specially designed to manage applications for three main economic immigration categories, which include:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
If you wish to apply through Express Entry Canada, you must create an online profile in the Express Entry pool, where you will be awarded points based on eligibility factors. Your CRS score will determine your rank in the pool and your chances of getting a PR.

Applying for Canada PR through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Another popular way to apply for Canadian permanent residency is through various Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Each province in Canada has its own eligibility criteria based on work experience, education, and intention to settle in that province, which you must meet to get a provincial nomination.

There are various PNPs available, including:

  • OINP – Ontario’s PNP Program
  • MPNP - Manitoba’s PNP Program
  • AINP – Alberta’s PNP Program
  • BC PNP – British Columbia’s PNP Program
  • PEI – Prince Edward Island’s PNP Program
  • NBPNP – New Brunswick’s PNP Program, etc.
Things to consider when applying for Express Entry and a PNP simultaneously

Applying for Canada PR through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

YES! You can apply for both of these immigration programs at once but here are some things you might want to keep in mind -

Eligibility Requirements

If you are applying through a PNP program, you must qualify for the eligibility criteria set by a specific province or territory. Some PNPs also require you to have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer in that province, while some have an in-demand occupations list.

At the same time applying for an Express Entry will require you to check eligibility for Canada PR for one of the three federal economic immigration programs - FSWP, FSTP, or CEC. If you qualify, you will be required to create a profile.

Express Entry Profile

To apply for both programs, you must create an Express Entry profile and express your interest in immigrating to Canada. You will be given a CRS score and your profile will still be a part of the Express Entry pool.

After getting a provincial nomination through PNP, you will be awarded an extra 600 CRS points in the Express Entry system. This will guarantee you an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in the next Express Entry draw.

ITA and PR Application

Once you have your ITA, you will be required to submit your application for a Canada PR visa along with supporting documents to IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada).

The last step is for IRCC to process your application and grant your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), which will allow you to live and work in the province that nominated you.

Meeting the eligibility criteria for Express Entry and PNP will increase your chances of achieving your dream of settling and working in Canada.
