There are thousands of international students enrolled in academic programs across Canada. Students who choose to study in Canada are not only provided with a world-class education but are also placed on a road that may lead to amazing employment prospects and permanent residence in Canada.

Here are the first few steps to study as an international student in Canada:

1. Enrol in a Designated Learning Institution

A study permit is required for international students who plan to study in Canada for more than six months. Study visa applicants must understand how they will be able to study in Canada, and an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI) is an important part of that process. A DLI is an institution that has been recognized to accommodate international students by a province or territorial government. The DLI database is updated on a regular basis.

2. Meet the eligibility and get admission

You need to make sure that you demonstrate proof of funds, no criminal records, clear medical certificates, a police clearance certificate, and proof that you will leave the country after the study permit expires. Next, get yourself accepted into the college or institution of your choice. Prospective students should be aware of college application dates, possible language requirements, and other admission criteria to study in Canada, as well as how much. This may be relevant when applying for a study permit or subsequently when seeking a post-graduation work permit. Finally, once accepted by the college, you shall receive a Letter of Acceptance.

3. Apply for a Study Permit

Students have the option of submitting their study permit application online or on paper. There are different instructions depending on where you apply. The instructions can be found on the Government of Canada's website. You need to fill out the online application, submit all documentation, and pay your tuition fee to finish the application process. Application processing costs and a biometric fee are included in the fees. Your fingerprints and a digital image are used as biometrics. Depending on your specific application, you may be charged additional expenses for a police certificate or a medical exam. Your study permit will be issued once your application has been approved.

International students and graduates have a distinct edge in several of Canada's economic immigration procedures and initiatives. The advantage that Overseas students have when looking for a permanent residency visa is that Canada prefers candidates who have already integrated into Canadian life and by having the exposure of Canadian education and living, international students become good candidates for a PR visa.

There are several visa categories that can get an international student a PR visa:

1. Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)

Candidates must have a full-time offer to work under the Federal Skilled Trades Program from up to two Canadian employers or, a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial body to be eligible for this program. Hence, the trades students and graduates in Canada have a fantastic opportunity as the graduates in Canada are given an advantage in the CRS scoring system, with up to 30 additional CRS Scores in addition to the points awarded for the degree of study.

2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

This is a fast-track immigration program for those who have recently worked in a skilled occupation in Canada. Graduates are ideal candidates since they can get an open work permit for up to three years, giving them plenty of time to gain the experience required for the CEC.

3. Federal Skilled Workers Class (FSWC)

Candidates must score 67 points to be considered under this program. For the previous study in Canada and employment experience in Canada, additional points are granted. The Federal Skilled Worker Class scoring system also favors young immigrants with language ability, which benefits most students and graduates.
