Individuals looking for jobs in Canada must be aware of the TEER categories that are eligible for Express Entry managed streams.

The eligible occupations you can work for in Canada are listed within the National Occupational Classification (NOC) – based on a TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities) category.

TEER are group occupations based on the general training level, education level, work experience, and responsibilities required for a specific job in Canada.

If you are eyeing Canada immigration, discover which TEER categories are eligible for Express Entry in 2024.

How does the NOC system work?

The NOC system of Canada has six TEER categories, ranging from TEER 0 to TEER 5. Each one of them is categorized based on the education and training you require for a specific job role in Canada. IRCC uses these codes to evaluate every applicant’s work experience.

For instance, TEER 2 to 1 requires the applicants to have a more formal education like a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or even doctoral degree. But as you go from TEER category 5 to 4, there won’t be much of a difference, and you could get a job with on-the-job training and not much work experience gained in a related occupation.

NOC codes are broken down like this:

  • The first digit signifies the broad occupational category
  • The second digit signifies the TEER category
  • The first two digits signify the major group
  • The first three digits signify the sub-major group
  • The first four digits signify the minor group
  • The full five digits signify the unit group or the occupation itself.

How to find your TEER level?

Identifying the National Occupational System (NOC) for your occupation is necessary if you wish to work in Canada and see if your job role is even available there.

You can find your NOC code by looking at the NOC matrix either by your industry or by keywords like your job title. Check the job description & make sure you perform the majority of the duties listed under that specific NOC code.

How to find your TEER level?

If you already know your NOC code under the old system, you can use Statistics Canada’s Correspondence Table to find a new one.

Once you have that, check your TEER level through the second digit of your 5-digit NOC code. For instance, if the job you are looking for is Web Designer, its NOC code is 21233. Its second digit is 1 – meaning that this occupation falls under TEER category 1.

It’s that simple!

Keep in mind that your occupation may be eligible for Express Entry managed streams, and you have to fulfil additional Canada PR requirements from India to apply for permanent residence.

TEER Categories for Express Entry Program

  • High-Skilled and Low-Skilled Work

If you’re applying for a Canada PR visa from India, then any occupation listed as TEER level 0,1,2, or 3 is considered “High-Skilled Work. Those listed as TEER level 4 of 5 are “Low-Skilled Work.”

The first digit in an NOC code determines the broad occupational category – 0 to 9. For instance, Skill Type 2 includes all - Natural and applied sciences and related occupations.

The second digit in an NOC code determines the TEER, which we have already discussed above. It has 5 skill levels and each one is related to the second digit of the NOC code. For instance, if the second digit is 0, the TEER skill level is 0. Where the second digit is 1, the TEER skill level is 1 and so on..

  • Major and Minor Groups

Sometimes the Express Entry programs might refer to the NOC major or minor groups.

Major Groups:

They refer to the first two digits of a NOC code together.

Example: Major Group 31 has the most occupations related to healthcare (Skill Type 3). They typically need a university education and all the occupants are given a NOC code that begins with the number 31.

Dentists - NOC 31110 (TEER category 1)

Pharmacists – NOC 31120 (TEER category 1)

Minor Groups:

They refer to the first three digits of an NOC code & group together similar occupations within each major group. You must also see that the first two digits of each minor group refer to the major group it belongs to.

Example: Judges (NOC 41100), Lawyers and Quebec notaries (NOC 41101) – both are in Minor Group 411.

Social Workers (NOC 41300) and educational counsellors (NOC 41320) – both are in Minor Group 413
