When applying for the Canada Express Entry program, securing a job adds additional points to your overall score required to be invited to apply for Canada PR from India. Though, it is not a mandatory step, but could gain you points lost in other factors such as age, education, language skills, and more.

Having relevant experience in in-demand occupations in Canada listed under the National Occupation Classification (NOC) list increases your chances of being selected in an Express Entry draw. To attract more skilled foreign workers, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced category-based selection draws in 2023.

Under these draws, candidates with experience in the following categories are prioritized:

Healthcare Occupations

Indian healthcare professionals working as dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical sonographers, and more are prioritized under Canada’s Express Entry when applying for Canada PR from India.

To qualify, you require at least six months of work experience in or outside of Canada - within the last three years - in one of the following targeted occupations:

Indians who have been working in one of the STEM occupations with skills and experience required in the Canadian labour market have higher chances of selection under Express Entry’s category-based draws.

To be eligible to apply for PR, you need at least six months of work experience – within or outside Canada, in the last three years – in one of the targeted STEM occupations listed below:

Trades Occupations

If you are an Indian with skills in a single trade such as manufacturing, construction, repairs, and more, you can apply for Canada PR through Express Entry. 

You must meet the general eligibility requirements for Canada PR to be eligible, plus have at least six months of full-time work experience in or outside of Canada in a single occupation. The experience should be within the last three years and in one of the targeted trade occupations listed below:

Transport Occupations

If you have at least six months of work experience in a full-time job in or outside of Canada, you can apply for PR in Canada under one of the following targeted transport occupations:

Last on the list are agriculture and agri-food occupations covering landscaping, farming, and production of food and produce.

To qualify for the Canada Express Entry program, you need at least six months of full-time work experience in Canada or outside Canada. The work experience gained must be in the last three years in one of the following targeted agriculture and agri-food occupations:

How to Apply for Canada PR through Express Entry?

To apply for Canada PR under Express Entry, you have three economic immigration programs:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
• Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
• Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Check your eligibility for PR using a 67-point calculator, which assesses candidates’ profiles based on factors like age, work experience, language proficiency, education, and other relevant factors. You need 67 out of 100 points to be eligible to apply for Canada PR from India.

Next, create an Express Entry profile under one of the Express Entry programs and enter the pool – where your profile will be ranked using a CRS score calculator and assigned a score out of 1,200. The higher the score is, the higher your chances are of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canada PR in one of the Express Entry category-based draws.

If you’re selected, you will have up to 60 days to submit a complete application for PR. If it gets approved, you will be granted PR status and will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).
