The Australian government has managed to cut down the processing time of many of its popular visas.

Last week, the Department of Home Affairs took to its social media platforms to announce it was streamlining Australia's visa systems and processes leading to significant reductions in processing times.

The department stated, “Processing on-hand visa applications is a government priority. We are working to reduce the time it takes to finalize visa applications. We are increasing the number of staff processing applications, and we will continue to bring more staff on board to perform this critical work.”

*Processing times are aggregate calculations for the category, i.e.: a number of different subclasses sit under each category. Given the progress made in reducing the visa backlog, in most caseloads, resources are now focused on processing both onshore and offshore cases to further reduce the number of on-hand applications.

“The Department of Home Affairs finalized almost 8.3 million visas in 2022-23, 190 percent more than in 2021-22.”

According to official reports, there has been a significant decline (62%) in the number of current Australia Study Visa applications compared to the corresponding period in 2022 - leaving approximately 48,800 applications pending. Whereas, the number of temporary visa applications also dropped (73%) from more than 600,000 on 30 June 2022 to just over 161,000 on 30 June 2023.

Immigrants applying from India continue to be Australia’s second largest contributor to international students. As of May 2023, the number of international students enrolled in Australian courses reached 608,942, with a significant portion of this figure, more than 98,000 students, originating from India.

Whether you’re considering short-term visa programs or considering a lengthier stay, the updated processing time is great news for immigrants wanting to study, work, or apply for Australia PR.
