Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have announced the acceptance of the Pearson Test of English (PTE) for Canada Visa applications.

Starting in late 2023, the PTE will join the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – as one of the three designated language tests that economic class candidates can complete to demonstrate their English language proficiency to the IRCC.

What is the PTE?

The Person Test of English (PTE) is by far the quickest, fairest, and most practical way to prove an applicant’s English language proficiency. Even though the PTE is relatively young, it has grown in acceptance and popularity - on a global scale.

As defined by the Pearson VUE, the regulatory body of PTE, the eligibility for the test does not include any specific criteria required to apply for the exam. Candidates must however provide correct details such as age, grades, and parental consent (if the candidate is below 18 years old).

At present, over 70+ countries accept the PTE exam.

What does this acceptance mean?

IRCC mandates economic class candidates to complete language proficiency tests to demonstrate their ability to economically establish themselves in Canada.

The acceptance of PTE for Canada Visa applications means that there are now five language proficiency tests in total for economic class candidates. In addition to the CELPIP and IELTS, TEF Canada (Test d’Evaluation de Français) and TCF Canada (Test de Connaissance du Français) are the two French language tests designated by the IRCC.

Although IRCC has not specified when applicants will be allowed to submit their PTE scores in support of their Canada Visa applications, it is however written on its official website that – it anticipates it will be in a position to do so by late 2023.
