Ontario PNP has once again highlighted its importance in Canada immigration planning by reaching its full allocation of 21,500 nominations through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program in 2024.

Throughout the year, the program saw strong demand, using Ontario economic priorities to nominate skilled worker for Canada permanent residency, with the final nomination issued in December.

The OINP works together with the federal immigration programs, providing targeted solutions to those skilled immigrants who can serve to occupy the labour market shortages in Ontario, especially in fields that the economy is in demand for, like health and technology services.

Ontario Nomination Breakdown 2024

Nomination in 2024 was divided into nine streams covering the diversity of Ontario immigration needs. In Ontario, the most nominations were in the Master's Graduate (3,810), Employer Job Offer International Student (3,283), and Express Entry Human Capital Priorities (6,330) streams. The breakdown of nominations in detail is as follows:

Grand total21,500

Its regular intake in all streams indicates that the province is dedicated to helping those industries where there is an extreme shortage of labour and, in the long term, to inviting global talent to prosper in the economic growth.

Focus on Healthcare: Over 3,200 Nominated

Ontario allocated about 15% of the total number of nominations to health professionals in response to increasing concerns about workforce shortages in the healthcare industry. More than 3,200 members of the healthcare workforce were nominated, namely:

  • Pharmacists
  • Psychiatric nurses and registered nurses
  • Orderlies, nurse aides, and patient service associates
  • Family physicians and general practitioners

This is in line with current initiatives to strengthen healthcare facilities in the province and provide the necessary service delivery in urban and rural settings.

Technology Occupations Dominate

Technology was a second focus area in 2024, with over 6,300 nominations, about 30% of the total, being given to people in technology-related professions. This includes:

  • Software engineers and designers
  • Programmers and software developers
  • User support technicians
  • Information Systems Specialists
  • Business Systems Specialists

The focus on technology expertise in Ontario suggests that the province aims to establish itself as an international technological hub, particularly in regions such as Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Ottawa.

A Shared Responsibility

In Canada, both federal and provincial governments have shared responsibility for immigration. The OINP represents an ideal example of how the needs of local economies can be specifically addressed through immigration strategies that also serve national interests. Through its full 2024 federal funds, Ontario remains central in the determination of the post-COVID future workforce and economic strength in Canada.

In the future planning to Apply for Canada PR in 2025, the province has high hopes about maintaining attention on high-demand areas and an effective immigration system that can benefit newcomers and the local economy.
