Germany immigration for overseas Entrepreneurs has two pathways – Setting up a business as an Entrepreneur/Self-employed and working as a Freelancer.  The eligibility criteria for the Germany Entrepreneur Visa/Permit will differ based on the pathway you choose.

Eligibility Requirements to set up a Business in Germany

To apply for a Germany Business Visa from India and set up a business in Germany, you have to fulfill specific criteria like:

  • Be aged 18 years or more
  • Possess necessary professional skills about your business concept and prove the same with suitable degrees (You will have to file an application for recognition of your overseas credentials to prove that these are on par with German standards)
  • Possess adequate knowledge of the German language as several legal documents and papers are only available in German language and your business associates or customers can also look forward to communication in the local language
  • Not have a ban from any court of law to launch a business in your desired profession/field
  • Demonstrate that you do not have a criminal history in your nation/s of residence, for certain professions
  • Further, you will have to fulfill some specific criteria and prove them in your Plan of Business accordingly:
  • There is a presence of demand for your services or products in Germany
  • Your commercial activities will positively impact the economy of Germany
  • You have arranged finances for your enterprise in Germany either through a bank loan or by injecting capital

Nevertheless, there also exists an exemption from fulfilling the above-specified criteria. You can launch a business in Germany corresponding to the research activities or your academic degrees without having to fulfill the specific criteria. This is if you have a Graduate Degree from a University in Germany or possess a German Residence Permit for research purposes.

Eligibility Criteria to work as a Freelancer in Germany

Along with fulfilling the general criteria specified already, you have to demonstrate that you have to fulfill the following conditions to work in Germany as a Freelancer:

  • Be able to fund your undertaking
  • Be able to earn for living costs for yourself including for any accompanying family members
  • Possess the licensure for practicing your profession from the competent authorities in Germany, if applicable
  • Possess adequate pension if aged more than 45 years


Documents Required for the Entrepreneur Visa Application

You will have to provide the following documents along with the Germany Entrepreneur Visa/Permit application:

  • A duly filled Visa application form with your signature inclusive of page 7 barcodes
  • Passport that has been offered in the last ten years and has a validity of a minimum of 180 days and a minimum of 1 twin-page spread
  • Passport’s biometrics page copy
  • 2 photographs of passport size
  • Evidence of adequate monetary resources
  • Plan of Business
  • Evidence of medical insurance
  • Past employment contract/s for scientists and researchers
  • Evidence of University Degree if graduated from a German University
  • Evidence that your overseas professional /academic credentials are accepted in Germany, if applicable
  • Evidence of sufficient retirement provision if you are aged 45 years or higher
  • Professional references
  • Freelancing/Entrepreneurial experiences

Application Fees

You will have to make payment of the required application fees when you submit an application for the Entrepreneur Visa, Residence Permit, Settlement Permit, or any extension for these.

The fee varies according to your location, the purpose, and duration of your stay in Germany:

  • Germany Residence Permit: €100 maximum
  • Germany Settlement Permit: €147 maximum
  • Germany Visa: €80.
