No matter whether you are planning to give an IELTS exam or any other language skill test, the CEFR level has a role to play. In fact, it is justified to refer to these levels as a standardized scale to define language fluency. CEFR levels are mandatory to avoid all those vague terms such as beginner, intermediate and advanced while testing an applicant’s language proficiency. This international standard to measure language fluency began in Europe and is also called the Common European Framework of Reference. CEFR level acts as an appropriate medium to cover the difference in distinct scoring systems for a language. For instance- An applicant who got 7-8 bands in IELTS is considered a proficient user in language tests with a C1 level in CEFR. The highest level in the English language test is C2 and can be attained by scoring 8.5 or 9 in the IELTS exam. |As per IELTS, 5.0 – 5.5 is a modest user and 6.0 – 6.5 is a competent user but it is CEFR level is B2.
|4.0 – 4.5
|The candidate with this band score is considered a limited user.
|This is an extremely limited user case
|This is an intermittent user of English language test
