Canada PR Visa Express Entry Program 2020

Check Your Eligibility For Canada Express Entry Program 2020 before applying

IRCC is still holding Express entry draws on a regular basis to issue ITAs to express entry candidates to apply for Canada PR Visa. Since the travel restrictions were implemented from March 18, 2020, a total of 8 express entry draws have been held with more focus on program-specific express entry draws targeting Canadian Experience Class (CEC)  candidates and express entry candidates with provincial nomination to apply for Canada PR Visa.

Canada Express Entry Program 2020

Introduced in January 2015, Express Entry program is a flagship immigration program from the Federal Government of Canada. It allows skilled workers from across the world to settle in Canada and contribute to its economy. The Express Entry program as its name also suggests, is aimed at faster processing of PR Visa applications and offer applicants an express entry to Canada. Under this program, the Government aims to process such applications within 6 months, while the current average processing time is 4-5 months.

What exactly is Express Entry program?

Express Entry program is an online application management system, which is used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for managing and processing applications received for Canada’s 3 federal economic immigration programs for skilled workers. These are:

The competitive immigration system offering express entry into Canada ranks the eligible candidates basis their points and the top ranking candidates are invited to apply for Canada permanent residence (PR) visa.

What are the benefits of the program?

Following are the benefits of the Express Entry program 2020:

  • Immigrants securing PR through Express Entry program get the right to live and work anywhere in Canada on Canada PR
  • It offers faster processing times in comparison to other Canadian immigration programs
  • As it’s a program by the Federal Government, selected candidates are invited directly to apply for PR

How does the system work?

We can summarize the Express Entry system in 5 steps, which are listed below:

1. Check your eligibility

The first step is checking if you are eligible under the Express Entry system. For this you are required to score the minimum of 67 points considering the following 6 eligibility factors:

  • Age
  • Language proficiency
  • Level of education
  • Work experience
  • Arranged employment in Canada
  • Adaptability

Use our 67-points calculator to check your eligibility.

2. Create an Express Entry profile

Once you know that you meet the basic requirements for the program, you can proceed to create an Express Entry profile. It is important to note that creating an Express Entry profile does not guarantee receiving Canada PR. It only acts as an Expression of Interest (EOI) on your part as an applicant. Once you create your profile, you will get entry into the Express Entry pool alongside other applicants where your profile will be ranked as per your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. It awards points to applicants out of the maximum of 1200 points. Your CRS score is a reflection of how economically successful you are likely to be in Canada. A higher CRS score increases your chances of receiving an ITA.

3. Create a Job Bank profile (it is optional)

At this stage, you can start looking for a job while you are still in your home country. This gives you the advantage of earning additional points for a job offer in Canada. You can create a Job Match account with Job Bank, which acts as a database to help match an applicant with the employers looking for workers possessing the skills the applicants have. For this, you need to go to Job Bank’s website and follow some easy steps to create your profile. It used to be a mandatory activity earlier, but is optional now.

4. Receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA)

CRS cut-off score for Express Entry is announced in the Express Entry draw which is held twice every month. Those applicants, who have a score above the cut-off score, are sent an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence (PR) visa.

Those applicants, who do not meet the cut-off score, can always try to improve their CRS score to get an ITA in a subsequent Express Entry draw. For this, they can try these:

  • Retake their language test
  • Get another certificate/ diploma/ degree
  • Gain more work experience
  • Get a job offer from a Canadian employer

However, not receiving an ITA through Express Entry should not discourage you. You can also apply for nomination under a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which will also award you 600 CRS points, significantly boosting your CRS score and improving your chances of receiving an ITA via Express Entry program.

5. Submit your application for Canada PR

Once you receive your ITA, you will have 60 days to submit your online application with the required documents and pay the required fee. You will be required to pay approximately CAD $1,040 that includes processing and right of permanent residence fee. Refer to this page for information on the fees required to be paid.

Along with ITA, you will receive information regarding the program you have been selected under. Following is the list of documents that you will need to submit at this stage:

  • Passport or travel documents
  • Language test results
  • Education credential assessment (ECA) report
  • Provincial nomination documents (if you have one)
  • Written job offer from a Canadian employer (if any)
  • Police certificates
  • Medical examination receipt
  • Proof of funds
  • Reference letters

After this, IRCC will thoroughly check the information and documents submitted by you to ascertain their authenticity. This can take 4-6 months. Once the checks are done to their satisfaction, they will send you a letter asking you to submit your passport for stamping which takes around 7 days.
